Collecting

J and J Cards was founded on a love of collecting sports cards. Like a lot of people, we at J and J Cards started collecting baseball cards when we were kids. But somewhere along the way, we lost touch with the hobby and then found it anew as adults. Memories are brought back and new ones made as we collect sports cards of our favorite players and teams whether we enjoy collecting baseball cards, football cards, basketball cards, hockey cards or cards from any other sports. We hope you enjoy our site and find some cards and articles of interest to you as we provide information on how to collect sports cards and information about the most expensive card...the Honus Wagner 1909 card. You'll also find information about sports museums, and locations of MLB spring training sites and MLB AAA affiliates and NFL training camps. And of course, feel free to visit our store at http://www.jandjcards.com/store.

Babyboomers are likely to remember card collecting as time when they would see how many Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays cards they could collect in the 1950's and 60's. While they were opening packs, they could be enjoying a stick of gum that came in many packs. They might have even put some of those cards, which would be worth a lot of money now, into their bicycle spokes so their bike would click like a motorcycle. If we only knew then about their potential value; well most of us didn't and that is why they are worth what they are today. If we owned a 1909 T206 Honus Wagner card in good condition we could quit our jobs and retire, for there are only thought to be 50 or so known to be left. The last time one sold it brought the owner 2.35 million dollars. Yes that's right over $2,000,000 was paid for one baseball card. So clean out your attics, burrow in your basements, and see if you find any cardboard dreams of your own.

The Honus Wagner Card...the most expensive baseball card.

This card is rare and there are two schools of thought on this. One explaination is that this early baseball card of Honus Wagner was included in packs of cigarettes or cigars from the American Tobacco Company back in 1909. Honus, a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was not a cigarette lover and it is thought that he did not want children to see him as approving the use of tobacco. So when the American Tobacco Company included a card with his image on it in packs of tobacco, Mr. Wagner demanded that the manufacturer stop putting his card in the packs. Thus, few of the cards were made. The other explaination is that Honus Wagner wanted to be paid to have his picture appear on the card so the company stopped putting his image on their cards. Either way, because of the rarity of the card and the few that are in good condition, this card has become the prize card to own.
